The pet bed is a great place for furry friends to take a nap-but it can become very disgusting and feel like it can't be cleaned at all. The bumpy shapes, stitched frames, and textured materials of many pet beds don’t seem to fit in a washing machine. But trust me: you can clean the pet bed.

As a pet writer at Wirecutter, I have spent years testing, soiling, and cleaning up all kinds of pet waste caused by my own cats and dogs. I also developed my own method to remove hair balls, bathroom accidents and mysterious stains on the bedding to make it look clean and comfortable again. It is relatively easy to make a dirty pet hideout flawless again with some necessities that pet owners may already have.

The cribs of cats and some dogs can be cleaned up within a few hours. But be prepared to take some time to deal with stubborn stains and really scrub the big dog bed. These large beds usually take longer to clean.

Before you clean the pet bed, remove all accumulated fur, dirt, and other debris. Pick up a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment, such as Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV352, or a hand-held vacuum cleaner with powerful suction, such as Black Decker 20V Max Lithium Pivot BDH2000PL. In a pinch, you can also use a reusable lint roller to pull up pet hair and debris. I am a big fan of ChomChom pet hair remover between deep cleansing. It can always solve the seemingly countless problems left by my long-haired cat Tanzie.

For pet beds with removable shells, please untie the shells from the filling. This will allow you to see how deep the stain has penetrated, so you can pre-treat it without leaving any confusion. Before removing the pile of fur, it is best to wipe off any fresh dirt with a paper towel. But for clumpy stains, you may find it easier to vacuum before handling the area. Pet stains should be thoroughly soaked in the cleaning solution for 20 minutes, and then blotted dry with paper towels.

I recommend using Nature's Miracle Advanced Stain and Odor Eliminator series to pretreat pet urine, feces, blood, vomit and other dirt to treat dog and cat dirt. They are designed to penetrate stains and remove all traces of odor, including labeled pheromones released by pets when they self-relief. Soak stubborn stains in Nature's Miracle for a few minutes, then wipe them off with a toothbrush, and let them dry overnight. If I am really worried about the stain, I will soak the stain again with the stain remover and then let it dry. The bacterial enzyme solution will decompose and remove stains and odors when placed.

When washing the bed, follow the manufacturer's instructions. If it is not provided, you may be able to safely throw the bedding shell into the large bed in the washing machine (or provide a whole bed for puppies and cats) in the cold cycle or in the hottest cycle where materials and stains can be handled superior. (Always use cold water to treat blood stains and make sure to remove stains before putting fabrics in the dryer. Heating will set them up.) Choose detergents that do not contain dyes and odors, such as Tide Ultra Stain Release Free, because pets are very sensitive to odors. sensitive. Run it again in the spinning cycle to remove any moisture that may be trapped in the lint on the bed.

Finally, tumble dry the sheets at low temperatures to limit fabric shrinkage or wadding, and do not use any drying paper. Similarly, wash a large bed in a bathtub and soak it in a warm water bath with some washing powder for 30 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly and wring out any water and soap residue, then let it dry in the sun.
